Outstanding! My ONLY gripe is the batteries under the floorboard! its a JEEP, where's the ground clearance?! I agree with the 'displaced' emmissions statements as well. However Cost is more than likely why you chose the batteries you did... Its amazing you did all that work... esp the LED light wiring... they sell LED conversion's dont they? and 'bulb's that screw in with 5-9 LEDs on top that install in seconds?
Maybe they didn't back then... at any rate, GOOD JOB!

Jesse James has nothing on you! You've got alot of grit to stick to and complete this project. I'd like to see an itemized price list on your project. Also, the effective range. You started with a heavy vehicle, was there a reason for your choice? Do you think you'll ever do another? I'd love to do an EV, maybe a motorcycle, the only problem with EVs is our country's electric grid is already overtaxed, so there isn't room for charging many.

Peace,
Steve

Several folks here in San Antonio have asked me if I have seen your Jeep and until tonight I had to say no. A short time back this last summer you attended a show CPS was putting on but I couldn't make it because I was on crutches from riding my Electric Motorcycle :( I work as a mechanic and also love Ev's , oh and live in the same city as you.. If you need any help just drop me a Email.

Hi Nick,

Great job with the conversion and subsequent tranny work.
I'll contact you by email with another project you might be interested in.

I also have a car that was converted from gasoline to electric operation. It's a 1972 Porsche 914. The clutch was removed by the students who did the original conversion so I can relate to your discussion about that. I usually start in third gear (good to over 55 MPH) and then shift into 4th for freeway driving (good to 78 MPH). I use 5th gear as an "overdrive" - top speed is about 80 MPH. It's a 120 VDC system with an Advanced 9 inch motor and Curtis 500 Amp controller. The car is a lot of fun to drive and has a wild yellow/fuschia/purple paint job.

AWESOME! A true Inspiration. Especially coming from a teenage mind, great work. But it seems everyone has the same question. I'm no expert but looks to me like it would be a little too pricy to be practical for the avearge Joe. I drive ALOT and with gas prices like they are I'm Spending nearly 200 bucks a week on fuel in my XJ. Now if there were a way to get the same 350 miles per charge as I do per tank I'd look into it more seriously. But as much as I drive there is NO way I could stop every 40 miles and plug 'er in for several hours.

Wow!

I accidently stumbled onto your site the other evening, and I can't even begin to say how impressed I am with your work!

I certainly hope that you are also working hard to get that EE or ME degree, that you've already proven that you're a perfect match for! There are SO many companies out there that desperately need someone in their engineering department(s) who see things like you do- please don't let that go to waste!

I love my Cherokee, and had pretty well given up hope of being a victim to rising gas prices- my truck is strictly a "work" vehicle, and sees maybe 35 miles a day- but I still feel like I'm getting raped every time I put that gas nozzle in the tank.

You've offered such an impressive alternative, and your timing couldn't have been better- given the current fuel crises. I hope that your parents realize what an incredible, dedicated mind they have raised- at 17, I barely had any idea what I was going to do on the upcoming weekend!

PLEASE don't let this page languish after the electro-jeep project is really "complete". You have some amazing new knowledge from this project, which can be applied to so many other vehicles. Please put that to good use!

Interesting. What sort of battery efficiency are you getting? The only problem with the "Zero Emissions" idea is that EV's are actually "Deferred Emissions" - there are still emissions involved in the generation of electricity, unless you are charging from 100percent windpower, solar, or some sort of water motive power (water wheel, tidal generator, hydroelectric.)

Also, the batteries seem to mass about twice as much as the engine you've removed - have you thought about trying to find a lighter battery set - perhaps a gel cell or something similar? You might also be able to use a brace of Optima "dry cell" batteries - ganged by fourteens, you can get 168 volts nominal, which should give you a buffer for running your motor. Also, the Optima is about half the mass of a conventional lead-acid cell, with comparable power density. The reduction in mass should help the range significantly.

Granted, I haven't perused your site in depth - YET - but I plan to, and I may have more questions. This may be a usable mod (if the power source emissions can be eliminated, charge time can be significantly reduced, and something can be done about battery weight) - but the main issues I've got with the electric vehicle idea centre around the weight of batteries involved, the disposal of unserviceable batteries, and the range and charge times. Also, how would you compare the percieved power before/after?

Have you considered some sort of hybrid arrangement, a la Toyota & Honda, to potentially do something about the recharging and range issues? It might be worthwhile - and the generator needs can probably be powered with a small engine - like a Briggs and Stratton or Tecumseh in the 10HP range (I'd probably use a "horizontal" engine for packaging reasons, but a little creativity should allow one to package a "vertical" engine if need be. Something to consider...)

I didn't read any other comments above so it may have already been mentioned, but i did read various pages, and i noticed that you were getting vibrations from your rear driveshaft. You shimmed it and lengthened the stock driveshaft. The way the jeep's transfercase is made, the driveshaft moves in and out (to a certain extent) of the transfercase. If you ever get in a situation where the driveshaft goes in or out too far, you will blow up your transfercase which is NOT cheap to fix! I STRONGLY advise you to purchase a slip yoke eliminator and a CV driveshaft combo. this will make it so the connection of the driveshaft and transfercase are fixed and the driveshaft will be doing all the moving in and out!!! E-mail me with any questions about this. OH and great job on the heep. Put on some 31" mudders and get 'er muddy.

I've built a few EV's, although nothing on this scale. Most of the parts required are rather expensive in the UK (most seem to come from the US). I have plans afoot to build a new Land Rover based vehicle for use in competitions. I had intended just to use a V8 - but this has set me thinking!

Awesome work. I'm not an SUV fan much(I refer to them as Suburban Utility Vehicles), but just showing the public a large SUV can be made into a usable, practical, and functioing EV is a major plus. It's a real stereotype killer.

I enjoy looking through your gallery and cannot wait to see what upgrades you do. Double the battery pack size, maybe? NiCds? I'm sure you could use some range and an increase to the top speed.

I'm currently in the process of converting my Triumph GT6+ to a 200 horsepower electric tire roaster. I have an idea in mind to copy Blue Meanie's sort of looks and speed with Alan Coccini's CRX's range and battery pack out of total vehicle weight percentage. Am not fully sure if it will work; I have to see where I'll be able to cut without risking the structural integrity of the unibody first.

If I can fit 25 Optimas into this thing, my range may end up being exceptionally high(80-100 miles to 100percent DoD? I'll keep dreaming...), not to mention the performance with over 200 lb-ft of torque on tap in what would be a 2,600 pound car.(0-60 certainly under 7 seconds!)

Glad to see more young people my age converting cars to electric. As Wayland told me, there are too many 'old farts' doing these things, and not enough young people with fresh ideas.

I'm sure this was a significant learning experience. I know mine certainly will be.

Let us all know of any changes to your ride.

This site has been an inspiration to me and has prompted me to convert my own vehicle, A 91 Toyota Previa LE. More weight, bigger battery pack, bigger motor, BUT ill be adding a backup generator (running at 2,200 watts) that will be the main charging source for my traction packs. Never have to plug it in and its exaust will use my existing exaust pipe and muffler. With the charger, capable of recharging 192volts from 20percent to 80percent in 20 minutes at a nominal 2,000 watts, I think I found the perfict combination of efficency and practicality.
