ScrapShades
- Fluorescent light shade / coverings made of scrap material -

While upgrading the lighting in my house, I chose to install linear fluorescent light fixtures along a wall of my bedroom. I chose linear fluorescent lights because of their very high energy efficiency and ability to provide a bright, even wash of light across a wall.

I originally planned to cover the bare fluorescent fixtures with a wooden "soffit" box that would only allow the light to spill downward; creating a nice wall wash. However, this plan failed because the wall and ceiling adjacent to the fixtures is not straight nor level, making it nearly impossible to make a nice looking box up against the wall. Also, directing all of the light downwards created a much greater "hot spot" of light along only one side of the room than I invisioned.

I set out to build a simple, custom covering for these light fixtures that would allow more light to get out into the room, and be somewhat of an art piece. In addition, I wanted to attempt to make the light shades entirely out of scrap material that would otherwise be thrown out or stuffed in an attic indefinitely. I'm all about re-using and recycling material whenever possible!

Long story short, I had accumulated a fairly large stash of both scrap electrical metallic tubing (EMT conduit), and cable TV wiring (the older RG-59 coaxial cable that used to be popular for home TV wiring.) I used the EMT conduit, black/White cable wiring, and some plastic zip ties I had lying around to complete the project. I ended up with a simplistic and inexpensive shade / covering for my linear fluorescent lights while achieving the very modern and unique look I was hoping for.
